Dark Sky lighting: what you need to know
Dark sky compliance has become a popular topic in recent years as homeowners are becoming more aware of light pollution and the effects it can have upon your neighbors, your community, and wildlife. (It even impacts astronomy in some localities.)
Quite a few Dazzle Lighting Co clients ask us specifically about dark sky rules, guidelines, and ordinances and we’re always happy to discuss the topic. While dark sky compliance may seem like a complex subject, it’s really quite simple and not especially restrictive. (At least in most localities! Here’s Boulder, Colorado’s ordinance. Here are Douglas County’s guidelines.)
There are five dark sky principles, according to Dark Sky International:
Use light only if it is needed.
Use light only when it is needed.
Use warmer colored lights where possible.
Light should be no brighter than necessary.
Direct light so it falls only where needed.
The great news is that the five dark sky principles happen to align closely with the professional outdoor lighting design principles that Dazzle Lighting Co strives to meet with each and every design and install. Here’s an easy way to think about dark sky design: Will this bother my neighbors? Will people driving by my home think “wow that’s obnoxious?” If you’re safe on these two fronts, odds are very good that you’ll be in the clear with regards to dark sky compliance.
Whether you’re in San Diego or in the Denver area, Dazzle Lighting Co is standing by to design a lighting plan that beautifies your environment and enhances enjoyment of your property while at the same time aligning with dark sky design principles. Give us a call!
